Vans The Old Skool, Vans classic skate shoe and the first to bare the iconic side stripe, has a low-top lace-up silhouette with a durable suede and canvas upper with padded tongue and lining and Vans signature Waffle Outsole. In 1944, Paul Van Doren dropped out of school at the young age of just fourteen when he realized he didn’t like school! (Stay in school kids!) Paul had a strong passion for horses and found his way down to the horse race track where he earned himself the nickname “Dutch the Clutch”, and for just one dollar Paul would give you the odds of every race. Paul’s mum, Rena, really did not like the idea of Paul being without a real job and not attending school, so she insisted that he get himself a job at Randy’s, a one-time independent shoe manufacturer located in America. His job required him to sweep the floors and eventually make shoes. Paul loved the job and worked hard, eventually climbing his way up the corporate ladder and became the Executive Vice President at just 34 years old, wow! As a result of Pauls influence, Randy’s became one of the biggest shoe manufacturers in America. From Van Doren’s fast success in Massachusetts, he was sent to Gardenvale, California to try to turn around a failing Randy’s factory that was burning close to a million dollars every month. Paul and his brother Jim moved both their families and settled them in Anaheim to help turn the factory's woes around. After just 8 short months of being in Gardenvale, Paul had the factory functioning even better than the one in Massachusetts! And then three months after saving the Randy's Gardenvale factory, Paul Van Doren decided he wanted to start his own shoe brand, and from that day the iconic Vans was born.
