If someone were to ask you to describe the colour Khaki, you'd probably be able to, or you'd give it a fair shot anyway. Chances are you'd say something like "Oh they're a cream-ish light tan camel sort of colour" or probably just "beige", and hey, you'd be right! Take a look at any golf course in Australia and you'll see middle aged men en masse sporting a pair of ironed Khaki Pants. But what is that word Khaki exactly? And why on earth have we been using it to describe an entire sub-industry of men's pants? Well you may be here to shop, but West Brothers is going to give you a free history lesson, lucky you!
We can thank Sir Henry Lawrence for this one. Lawrence was a British solider stationed in India back in the 1840's and he was a dude who shared our strong belief in wearing comfortable clothing.
So Lawrence is India, it's hotter than the surface of the sun and his military assigned gear just wasn't going to cut the mustard, so old Henry, being the innovator that he was came up with a brilliant idea, he took his comfortable lightweight pajama bottoms and covered them in dirt until they came up as the same colour as his military fatigues. Incidentally, in Urdu the words "soil colour" translate to Khaki. So there you go, it more or less means dirt, fair to assume why the fashion industry embraced the word Khaki Pants instead of Dirt Pants.
Soon enough all of Sir Lawrence's chums picked up on his brilliant idea and before we knew it half the British infantry were wearing Dirt Pants! And there we have the story of the origin of Khaki Pants, you learn something new every day!
History lesson done with, we actually have an awesome range of Dickies Pants and Shorts in stock, guaranteed to be made from only the most premium of materials and dye colouring - none of Sir Lawrence's dirt on any of our merch, that's a West Brothers guarantee!
