If you didn’t already know, this star trainer was created by adidas with a French tennis player, Robert Haillet, who actually designed the shoe. They featured a white leather make-up, with three rows of airy holes and the instantly recognisable green tongue. But how did their name come about? Well, this sneaker only became the “Stan Smith” in 1978 when adidas became the official sponsor of a legend of the tennis court, Stanley Roger Smith. You’ll spot the portrait and signature of the renowned player on the shoe’s tongue.
It didn’t take long for the Stan Smith to take off, and in fact its popularity rocketed so much so that the tennis shoe entered the Guinness Book of Records in 1990, after over 70 million pairs were sold worldwide. Fast-forward to 2010, and the timeless trainer was named the best-selling sneaker by Stylight.
Over all these years, this beloved set of kicks has inspired designers and been worn by countless celebrities, such as Sienna Miller, Victoria Beckham and Kanye West. Pharrell Williams has even designed several versions of the shoe himself!
It’s time for you to slide into a pair and discover the comfort, visual appeal and historical pride for yourself!
